Age: 27

EDUCATION

University of Leicester

Ph.D. in Physics

2008

Thesis: “X-ray Scattering From Self-Assembled Alloy Structures”

Graduated in January 2008

My PhD was experimental in nature. I produced samples of gold nanoparticles (1-6 nm size) that were probed by X-rays at the European Synchrotron Light Source in France to show how they assemble on a surface in real-time. A thin film alloy was produced between iron and gadolinium in real-time and the structure was determined by X-ray scattering techniques.

Some of the main challenges involved: Learning about experimental techniques as I went along, which in turn involved quick thinking; The preparation of a variety of gold nanoparticles of varying sizes by chemical synthesis within a budget; and the organisation, manipulation and analysis of over 80 Gigabytes of data. Other duties included: Helping with undergraduate laboratory demonstrating and laboratory script preparation; and helping a summer student on the University SURE program to produce and study light scattering from gold/silicon hybrid nanoparticles. These particles have important medical applications.

I used Windows and Linux throughout my undergraduate and PhD degrees, and Sun Unix extensively at British Energy and my Year in Industry along with Unix shell scripting to make life easier!

Programming

Fortran 77     First used at British Energy in the modelling of Nuclear Power Stations. Learnt in my 1st and 2nd years as an undergraduate.

C                 Learnt at undergraduate level for 9 hours a week over 5 weeks in my 3rd year. Used to help predict Mie light scattering from nanoparticle solutions. Used in my PhD to create a program to calculate monolayer growth in alloy materials.

C++              Learnt at undergraduate level in 2nd and 3rd years.

Java             Learnt at undergraduate level in 3rd and 4th years. During my PhD I demonstrated and provided support to 3rd and 4th year undergraduates in Java workshops

Java Script     Demonstrated and provided support to 4th year undergraduates. Helped to develop the lab based script that students use in workshops. Included HTML code.

IDL               Learnt in my 3rd and 4th year at undergraduate level. Demonstrated and provided support to 3rd and 4th year undergraduates throughout my PhD.  Helped develop the lab based script that students used in workshops

Visual Basic   Learnt VB for Excel at undergraduate level. During my PhD I demonstrated and provided support to 3rd and 4th year undergraduates in Excel workshops. Also used in my PhD to help speed up data manipulation.

MATLAB         Used to model basic Mie Light scattering theory.

Perl              Self taught. Used throughout PhD as a quick simple scripting tool.

ORIGIN LAB    Used as main scientific spreadsheet tool throughout my PhD. Created Origin Lab scripts to aid with the data analysis.

IGOR PRO      Used as secondary tool to aid data analysis throughout my PhD.
