Current Status Sept
2002 – Current Date
I am currently working on a short
term contract. I am managing a European network. This
includes all the LAN / WAN links. Firewalls and running
the Exchange 5.5 – 2000 migration project.
I also deal with majority of the 3rd
Line Support queries that come into the helpdesk.
Apr 2000 – September 2002 -
Accelrys Ltd (Formerly
Synomics Ltd ) Cambridge
Snr. Systems
Administrator
At [snip] my job role was to
support and maintain the company’s servers, including
NT4/2k Servers, Notes, Citrix (and TS), Firewall, and
DMZ hosts.
I was responsible for making sure
they are available in accordance with the SLA set out by
the IT Dept. This involves keeping them up to date with
software patches, hardware updates, as well as the
installation of new software.
Though the hardware is maintained
by Dell / Compaq, I have performed regular hardware
upgrades on these servers.
I was heavily involved in the
design and implementation of the new Disaster Recovery
plan, which involved the installation of NetBackup
Datacenter. We also decided to use NetBackup Pro. The
DataCenter products run on win2k servers, backing all
mission critical hosts. Whilst NetBackup Pro backups all
clients, including Laptops, and desktops.
Accelrys use Unix in a wide
variety of situations. These would mainly be hosts that
provided services to the public and employees, such as
DHCP, DNS (Bind), WWW (Apache), FTP, and Radius
Authentication Services. It was part of my job to
maintain and manage these services. The company also
used Unix host in-house for QA purposes. These hosts
were also came under my remit.
[snip] (my previous employer)
was purchased by [snip] in July 2001. Before then, I
was responsible for the company’s messaging system, an
Exchange (5.5) cluster on a Dell PowerEdge cluster.
My first task was to implement
the Exchange system, to replace Netscape Suite Spot. I
did a task analysis and discovered the company needed
more than just the messaging functionality, so I
implemented the cluster to provide extra power, and
stability. I also implemented a failover cluster for
disaster recovery, as well as an inbound mail scanner
sat in the newly developed DMZ.
Our disaster recovery plan also
called for some off site backups/storage and firewall
redundancy. The backups were managed with a co-location
package that was tailored for offsite backups. This
provided us with off-site storage, and security in event
of a disaster. Firewall redundancy was implemented
using Stonebeat, to provide us with immediate failover
in the event of any outage

Training Officer
Technical Skills Used
Exchange Server (Messaging
Services)
Firewall -1 (TCP/IP, Security)
Network Services
My major responsibility at Tellus
was to manage the 3 other members of the Consultant’s
Team. Between us we looked after more than 25, 000 users
from 10 companies. I specified, installed and
maintained Corporate Exchange Servers for our clients,
meeting Senior management and the users to get a feel
for the requirements and expectations of the system.
I also instigated Firewall-1
consultancy services. I had noticed that a lot of our
clients were using inadequate security measures but were
unsure of how to proceed. I put my idea about this
niche in the market to my CEO, and with his support set
about meeting with clients and then discussing the idea
of setting up a new Consultancy team at Tellus to handle
this side of the company. I received a very warm welcome
and all but one of our clients agreed to have us manage
their security services. I created a new team of 4
consultants under my leadership, and we made a
tremendous success of this.
I was also tasked with creating a
new Training Team to carry out in-house or on-site
training for MS Products such as Office, NT, Win9x,
Exchange, Networking skills and many more. |
