Accomplishments
I designed and developed an in house Perl module named
PGConf an acronym for PostgreSQL General Configuration utilised
for the numerous ETL processes on fifty plus dedicated database
servers to assist developers with database connectivity, data
integrity, data manipulation, balances, checks and controls.
I was the lead designer and developer in the MDS selection
wizard named SLCT this untilised the Star Schema concept in
generating the C-tree indexed files utilsed by SLCT. This now
proven concept was then adopted throughout the company on every
customer reporting system which has now evolved to incorporate
Java, VB, Oracle, PostgreSQL and all in house BI tools.
Employment History
Jan 2007 – Current
Contracting
London
After immigrating to the UK with my wife, I am currently
contracting as a remote PostgreSQL DBA. My initial client is
[snip] who offered me a contract when I left their permanent
employment in December 2006, to remotely administer their 37
OLAP/OLTP database installations
Jun 1998 – Dec 2006 - [snip] Group
Braamfontein – South Africa
I started at [snip] on the 1st June 1998 as a Junior Analyst
Programmer in the Merchandising Department where I developed,
maintained and supported various projects for example:
stock procurement models, open to buy, stock ageing and
reporting selection wizards. I was promoted to Senior Analyst
Programmer at the beginning of 2002 and took on the added
responsibilities of supervising three junior staff members,
liaising directly with clients and the merchandising decision
support systems.
I transferred to the in store team in the second half of 2002 to
gain knowledge and experience in the debtors and creditors
environments. There I continued with my previous
responsibilities with the addition of client helpdesk, unit
testing and software support.
I was recruited into a Database Administration role to establish
a database team, mid 2004 due to a rapid increase in database
installations. As the sole member of this team I took on fifty
two databases (consisting of: Data Staging Areas, Merchandising
Decision Support, Branch Performance Summary, Data Warehouses,
Central Credit Granting, Credit Control Offices and Merchandise
Planning Systems) in both PostgreSQL and Oracle environments. My
responsibilities included installation, configuration, database
design, performance monitoring and tuning, security, backup and
recovery, ETL, disaster recovery and production monitoring and
controls. Over an eighteen month period the number of databases
had increased to over three thousand OLAP and OLTP
installations, at this point I opted to specialise in the
PostgreSQL environment, the Oracle environment was then
outsourced. I left this company when my wife and I emigrated to
the UK. Apr 1995 – Dec 1997
