WORK EXPERIENCE

Jan 2005 – Present,

[snip]. Internet and mobile content provider.

DBA and Systems Manager

[snip] provides Web, Mobile and Voice technologies to a variety of clients with offices in the UK, Chile and Hong Kong, and provides content to companies all over the world.  The technology platforms provide mobile and sms, web and voice content to a number of industries, including TV, sport and adult & online gambling.  I was also responsible for the maintenance of the MySQL databases for Netbanx, the UK’s largest independent online credit card transaction processing company prior to its sale in November 2005, with in excess of 13 million records.

I have been working in a dual capacity as DBA, looking after the variety of systems running on DB2, Oracle, MySQL and SQL Server, and manager of the internal systems. I’ve been required to set up and manage a number of database systems including replication and datacopy between different platforms. I’ve also been required to clone Oracle databases, and perform installs from the ground up.  I’m experienced in such technologies as imp/exp, SQL*Loader, cold backups and database cloning.  I’ve installed and used statspack for monitoring and analysis of database performance, and have a good understanding of the underlying architecture of the Oracle system. I’ve recently been one of the technical leads in a migration and infrastructure upgrade of our CMS website running Mediasurface on Oracle 9i. I’m seeking a new role as [snip] are currently making a round of redundancies.

April 2004 – December 2004

[snip]. Consultancy.

I joined [snip] to perform consultancy on a number of projects, including improving the security of the Food Standards Agency website which was based on mediasurface, and designing and architecting an intranet and website using Sharepoint and CMS Server for Hutchesons Grammar, Glasgow’s largest private school.

I also project managed [snip]’s main project for their largest client, for whom we ran a remote data collection system using PDA units in the field, running a bespoke application for data collection.  I managed the team in charge of supporting the hardware and software, as well as auditing and controlling stock of the PDA units and accessories.  I was involved in the initial consultation with the Scottish Criminal Records Bureau, to design and build a content managed intranet system.

In November 2004, [snip] was put up for sale so I felt it was the right time to further my career.

May 2003 – April 2004

Consultant and Freelance Web Developer [snip]

I was responsible for a number of projects of varying complexity and size. I have carried out the design and development of web applications from the ground up, on projects such as [snip].  [snip] is becoming a successful niche market e-commerce project, on which I have consulted providing technical strategy solutions to search-engine optimisation. I have also advised clients on Internet business strategy and integration, as well as purely technical solutions. Through my trading name “simplis-it” I was a reseller of Sophos anti-virus and anti-spam products, and advised on Internet security issues.

March 2002 – May 2003

BiP (Government contract information publisher and E-tendering facilitator)

Technical Consultant/ Project Manager.

On Joining BiP, I took on the role of Technical Consultant on their high security “Vault” project, part of the "DELTA suite" of web. This required me to take responsibility for the development of both the hardware and software within this project. I was project manager for the pilots that were run with several Public Sector bodies that were evaluating the system prior to adoption, in line with the “Information Age Government” guidelines. I performed carried out installations and evaluation of DB2 and Oracle as a replacement to MySQL.  This also involved a small amount of data migration work to prove effectiveness of the platforms. I was also responsible for the research of BS7799 and T-Scheme certification to provide evidence of Vault’s secure nature.

December 2000 – February 2002

Great Universal Stores (Reality Solutions E-business solutions architects)

Team Leading Analyst Programmer/Junior Oracle DBA

Within my time at Reality, I became experienced in all aspects of the software development lifecycle and was responsible for developing a number of large database driven e-commerce sites, using a variety of technologies, and frequently liased with clients, both internal and external.  I acted as technical lead and team leader in a number of projects, which utilised my extensive problem solving skills and required a breadth of technical expertise, and I was involved in the WAP enablement of large portals.

In the last 6 months, I took on the role of Junior Oracle DBA, reporting to the Senior DBA. I was responsible for Oracle 8i database administration on a number of projects and gained experience in a number of areas. I managed the data-migration from Mysql to Oracle for a large project, which involved building software to automate the migration process. I was responsible for the systems administration of the servers required for a number of projects, using Linux, Solaris and Windows 2000/NT operating systems. In addition, I was the Technical Representative on the Social Committee. Reality Glasgow was closed at the end of February 2002.
