[1996-1998] University of Bath – BSc Computer Software Technology

            I studied at the University of Bath for a BSc in Computer Software Technology, which was a standard 3 year course. Having passed my first two years, my placement at Siemens Plessey was withdrawn at the last moment due to a takeover by BAe, and I was unable to finance my final year. In the future I would like to complete my degree either through a work sponsored scheme, or via the Open University.

            During my second year, I was elected president of the Amnesty International Society, and Computing officer for the Mathematical Society.

            Audit of JPMorganChase production servers, disaster recovery sites and trading floor systems throughout EMEA. 

Company: [snip] [05/01/2003 – 20/03/2003] : Contract

            Web design/consultancy for LTB systems. I was responsible for the design and backend of the e-commerce site www.ltbsystems.com using PHP4/mySQL/apache. 

Company: J[snip] [26/11/2002 – 01/12/2002] : Contract

            Rollout of new desktop hardware at the Chaseside Bournemouth site 

TEFL: Language teacher in China [01/05/2002 - 01/11/2002] : Freelance

            I taught English to students in Shandong, China for 6 months. 

Company: Aethos Communications [01/02/00 – 01/03/02] : Permanent

Position: Implementation Engineer 

            Aethos are a vendor of turnkey mobile phone billing systems, specializing in providing pre-paid Intelligent Networks and consulting services to mobile service providers. My key responsibilities were:-

• Total ownership of new projects from design until installation on a customer’s network.
• Informix load balancing/migration/configuration on HPUX Intelligent Networks
• Informix DBA/commissioning & disaster recovery implementation
• Software R&D, development of kernel drivers for specialist hardware (C/C++ UNIX)
• Providing 24/7 technical support to EMEA customers on UNIX/database issues
• Performance increasing/Kernel tuning/compiling/code security auditing
• Construction/Configuration/OS Installation of HPUX High Availability servers

Aethos were eventually taken over by Logica Aldiscon, who due to the industry downturn instigated a series of redundancies, which eventually affected my department. 

Company: Advanced Personnel Technology [01/07/99 – 20/01/00] : Permanent

Position: IT Administrator 

            APT are suppliers of HR consultancy and productivity software. My responsibilities at this company were:-

• Administration of the NT/UNIX network
• Drafting all IT process documentation
• Onsite installation of software
• Design and upkeep of the company website (PHP/mySQL apache backend)

I left APT due to receiving an invitation to join Aethos Communications as an Implementation Engineer with a superior salary/benefits package. 

Company: Roguewave Software [10/12/98 – 18/06/99] : Contract

Position: Technical Support Specialist 

            Roguewave Software is the leading supplier of commercial grade re-useable C/C++ classes. My key responsibilities were:-

·        1^st line customer support

·        C/C++ development over all major UNIX flavours.

·        Customer project debugging. 

I left Roguewave after my contract expired, which I decided not to renew. The main reason for this was that support was being centralized in Amsterdam, and I did not wish to live overseas at that time. 

Personal Interests

I have a wide range of interests, ranging from sports to foreign languages. My most recent hobby is undertaking the large task of learning Mandarin Chinese. Inevitably, some of my interests also mirror my professional life, especially in the area of UNIX and Linux development.
