Personal Statement
I am an experienced
and motivated Mechanical Engineer with a broad range of skills.
I have the ability to apply both traditional engineering
techniques and innovative solutions to complex and novel
problems. I enjoy working and succeeding in challenging and
rewarding environments.
Education
1998-2002 University of Plymouth.
BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering. Grade Achieved 2:1
The degree comprised of theoretical and practical course
modules, including; Engineering Design, Thermodynamics, Fracture
Mechanics and The Engineer in Business.
3rd Year Project – “Investigation into the Pressure
Hull Design of Small Section Underwater Vehicles” An
investigation into the design and manufacture of pressure hulls
suitable for small section underwater vehicles. Stress analysis
was performed using Pro/Mechanica Finite Element Software and
verification using hand calculations.

Internal company training on the requirements of CE marking and
PUWER assessments.
2003 Ship Safety Management Office
Certificated training provided by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) on
the production and presentation of safety cases and safety
assessments using recognised quantitative and qualitative
analysis tools and techniques.
Employment History
2005 – Present [snip], Dorking
Senior Engineer (Mechanical Design Team)
Customer facing position that has involved working on a number
of varied engineering projects for MoD and non-MoD customers.
Projects undertaken include safety assessments and high-profile
design and manufacture projects. The successful completion of a
number of the projects has led to repeat business and further
work.
Key responsibilities and achievements:

Writing and preparing a number bids and proposals of values
ranging from £5k up to £200k.

Management of projects to £50k value.

Detailed safety assessment of helicopter fuel system using
fault trees.

Design and testing of blast mitigation barriers for MoD
customer. This work culminated in successful testing and an
order for further units.

Detailed drawings of a Paddock Complex used in Formula 1
entertaining.

Design, manufacture and commissioning of athlete training
equipment for UK Sport.

Conducted internal company audits in accordance with Quality
Assurance procedures.

Configuration of the optimum hangar deck layout for the new
Royal Navy aircraft carriers.

Design review of an electrically controlled actuator for use
on remote oil rigs.

Mechanical Design Engineer (Platform Systems Integration Group)
Experience across a range of defence projects supporting the
Royal Navy, in particular research through to development and
production of towed array handling systems.
Key responsibilities and achievements:

Design and delivery of current in-service Towed Array
Handling Winch Systems.

Development and delivery of a novel test device used to test
weld integrity around deck pads. I was also required to
complete safety assessments including writing the safety
case for this and a number of other items of equipment.

Successful track record in achieving CE accreditation on a
range of production standard equipment, which has
subsequently been accepted into RN service.

Wide ranging customer interaction including attending
meetings, assessing requirements, writing bids, producing
technical deliverable reports and product handover.

Significant experience at producing drawings to BS EN 8888
using Pro/Engineer 3D CAD package (including use of Pro/Intralink).

Understanding of Finite Element Analysis, using Pro/Mechanica.
Use has included analysis of structures and pressure
vessels.

Everyday use of Microsoft Office applications for report
writing and preparing presentations.

Logistics support to MoD UOR, which included regular liaison
with the MoD customer, and ensuring equipment was correctly
packed, listed and transported to meet shipment times.

University Placement Year completed within Underwater Systems
Group. Work included research and development projects
associated with underwater platforms.
Key responsibilities and achievements:

Designing and developing a deployment system for a vertical
array.

Liaising with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure items
are delivered on time and to the required quality.
Interests
I enjoy most sports and my main interests lie in rugby and
cycling. I also enjoy socialising with friends and going to the
cinema.
