Systems Manager Reprographics                                           Aug 1996 – Jul 1998

Technical Environment

Unix, Windows NT, ISDN, Apple Macintosh

Responsibilities

Manage the implementation of a bespoke Unix based distributed accounting system throughout 60+ branches of the reprographic division.

Specific Tasks

The project was seriously over budget and 5 months overdue when I took responsibility for the project. The main cause of the project failing was the lack of management of the external suppliers, particularly the software developers. Following a rapid review of the project I recommended the cessation of the rollout pending the completion of the software development, the scope of which had ‘ballooned’ out of control. The scope was re-defined, development tightly managed and completed on time according to my new project plan. Rollout was resumed and the project was subsequently completed on time.

·      The installation and subsequent technical support of one of the first digital offset lithographic printing presses in the UK, and supporting ISDN and network services. This technology supported the development of one of the first rapid turnaround electronic printing businesses in the UK, providing ISDN enabled customers the opportunity to transmit, via ISDN, digital artwork for printing and subsequent despatch, usually within 1 day of receipt of order.

·      Manage, recruit and train a team of 7 graphic designers and printers.
