February 2005 – Current
Migration Consultant / Technical Lead – [snip]
One of five key personnel recruited to assist in the separation
project between [snip] and [snip]. [snip] is globally positioned
legal business, which has recently seen an aggressive play on
its competitors. [snip] is an appreciably different
business to that of [snip] in its operational volumes and
turnover, which resulted in a transformation programme to
separate the two entities.
As a migration consultant I undertook a key role in the £1
million business separation project. The primary remits were in
removing the dependencies from [snip] and [snip] in a timely and
cost efficient manner. The challenge was for me and other
colleagues to deliver a solution which would allow [snip] to be
self sufficient and capable of running all demands and
requirements set by the business while also providing [snip]
with a stable and future proofed IT platform. During the
technical separation project there were 6 critical key stages
identified.
·
Planning and implementing an infrastructure platform capable of
providing both the current and future needs of [snip].
·
The creation of a Proof of Concept lab to allow all phases of
the project to be fully tested and allow us to mitigate any
risks along the way.
·
The initial design and testing leading to the implementation of
a cross domain trust and new active directory infrastructure and
associated network services such as DHCP, WINS and DNS utilising
the latest windows 2003 technologies.
·
The migration of all user, computer and Group objects to the
newly created domain.
·
The design, testing and implementation of [snip] Exchange 2003
infrastructure and the migration of both mail accounts and
public folders across the domain trust.
·
The migration of all application servers into the newly created
domain.
·
In addition to the above running in parallel other activities
such as Internet security using (GFI and Web Marshall) and
backup (ARCserve) and Antivirus Protection (Mcafee) projects
were also running in tandem.
Shortly after the migration I was re-hired by the IT management
team as a Technical lead to assist in the transition of the new
infrastructure manager and to bring him up to speed, together
with providing technical assistance to other business projects /
acquisitions, while also providing guidance and support for
junior members of the team.
Responsibilities include: -
·
Contracted in and expected to be a proficient self-starter with
the ability to be capable of resolving business critical needs
to a successful conclusion and in a timely manner.
·
Guide junior team members in new and existing technologies.
·
Managed technical support staff and assisted in the recruitment
of infrastructure mgr
·
Develop and document change processes
·
Manage 3rd party contracts
·
Documented both core infrastructure and application services to
assist as part of a corporate Disaster Recovery plan.
Implementation, documentation and the maintenance of current
Mcafee AV solution.
·
Made significant changes, which resulted in realised cost
savings, streamlined business processes and provided added value
services to IT function.
·
Support and maintenance of network service and application
servers.
·
Monitoring of audit and security logs
·
Monitoring of server based systems via the use of Microsoft and
HP monitoring and remote management tools.
·
Server rebuilds and configuration
·
Manage and maintain existing Active Directory and Exchange 2003
organisations.
·
Maintenance of system login, logoff, start-up and shutdown
scripts along with group policy.
·
An active member in the project management, documentation and
implementation of [snip]s Test Lab environment project. This
involved [snip] current network service and application
infrastructure being replicated to enable the testing of key
systems and applications out of the production environment.
·
Planned and delivered the WSUS security patch management project
to meet the day-to-day security patch management requirements
set by the business.
·
Implemented and documented current Microsoft RIS desktop image
solution project to provide a standardised desktop build image,
eliminating inconsistencies and security flaws found within the
previous cloned image solution. While in addition reducing PC
rebuild times and aiding in the support of remote sites where
support personnel aren’t readily available or would require
travel.
·
Previous backup solution was both inconsistent and unreliable,
backup windows were inflexible causing tape equipment to fail
and servers to be overloaded during core business hours, while
also not inspiring confidence with local support staff and local
departments in the recovery of critical data should an incident
occur. My responsibility included evaluating and redesigning an
alternate solution, which corrected the above issues using
existing software, hardware and licensing. The alternate
solution is now both reliable and local support staff and
business areas are now confident in its ability to restore
company critical data in an efficient and timely manner.
