Present [snip] Software
Developer
I am currently engaged
on a 6 week contract to redesign an Access Database as part of a
business process improvement project being carried out by PCP
for one of its customers.
12/2004 –
12/2006 [snip] Senior Software
Developer
In this position I was
part of a team responsible for development of one of [snip]
core products, [snip] which is an insurance
company and corporate brokering solution that can be tailored to
a customer’s needs. The [snip] client is written
in VB6, and is made up of approximately 200 DLLs and OCXs used
in a mixture of early and late bound modes. The [snip]
database is developed using Oracle 9i, with some server side
functionality written in PL/SQL. Data access is performed using
ADO 2.8.
My key achievements with
[snip] were:
·
Developed new functionality for
a customer, who deployed [snip] in a call centre
of over 200 seats.
I was responsible for writing the accounts functionality that
sits behind the purchase process, ensuring that the correct
transactions and disbursements are created when policies are
purchased or changed.
·
Designed and implemented new
payment plan functionality, allowing our customers to offer
payment schedules to their clients.
·
Wrote a component for the
product that extracts due payments and formats these ready to be
sent to BACS for collection. This component also handles return
ADDACS and ARUDD messages.
05/2001 –
12/2004 [snip] Software
Development Team Leader
In this role I was
responsible for a small team of software developers tasked with
designing and implementing bespoke software management solutions
to meet requirements identified by the business. Project scale
ranged from small 1 – 2 day coding exercises to major
developments representing a significant investment. I was
responsible for ensuring that the projects were managed
effectively in order to deliver on time. This frequently
involved prioritising and rescheduling workload, and ensuring
effective communication throughout. Another key responsibility
was to ensure that the development process was adhered to and
that the company’s coding standards were met.
My main accomplishments
at [snip] were:
·
Established coding standards
and a full lifecycle development process.
·
Development of a Labour
Management System to interface with our existing project
management system, Primavera P3. The system allows users
throughout the company to view the programme of works, and
allocate staff to jobs, whilst ensuring that working hours
directives are adhered to. The system is based on a SQL Server
2000 database with a client written in VB 6, using ADO 2.7 for
data access. The server side encapsulates all the business
rules that must be applied, and includes change control,
notifications via console and email, and a full server side
audit trail.
·
Development of a call centre
logging system for [snip] 24-hour control centre. This was
initially a standalone Access database, but was upgraded to form
a module within the Labour Management System.
·
A Chart-Maker utility that
interfaces with Primavera’s P3 product to produce graphical
reports of project plan data. This was developed using VB.Net
and the Ra SDK for P3.
08/2000 –
05/2001
[snip] Systems Developer
In this role I was
responsible for the development and maintenance of Visual Basic
client/server solutions based principally around AS/400 and SQL
Server 7 data stores, and was involved in all phases of
development, from initial analysis, design and coding to
end-user testing. My duties included maintenance and
troubleshooting in addition to core development activities.
Also, I was also responsible for customising an off-the-shelf
business planning system, SalesLogix, which was implemented
throughout the UK sales force.
02/2000 –
08/2000 [snip] Visual
Basic Analyst/Programmer
I was responsible for
developing database solutions for management of donor
information on behalf of several registered charities. This
development involved some migration of ‘legacy’ systems, and was
carried out using Visual Basic 6 with Access 2000.
10/1992 –
02/2000
[snip] Various Roles
Initially working within
the Resources and Planning section providing clerical support
for the company’s track renewal activities. Whilst with [snip]
I developed MS Access 97 databases for management of public road
closures at level crossings, and temporary speed restrictions of
the line. While with [snip] I helped to set up a Track Renewal
Operations desk within their existing Control Centre.

During my career I have
had the opportunity to work with a variety of technologies and
have become adept at making different systems ‘talk’ to each
other. In addition to using the SDKs of off the shelf packages
like Primavera P3 I have also written a number of interfaces to
allow the transfer of data between essentially incompatible
systems.
In March 2006 I provided
a VB.NET prototype system to Network Rail which was part of a
proof of concept for their data integration project. The system
was designed to extract data from their planning system, and
allow users to define data maps visually, saving their
configuration as XML.
OTHER INFORMATION/INTERESTS
I am always keen to
build on my own development and programming skills, and would
ultimately like to expand on my project management experience.
I feel comfortable working both in a team environment, and
individually, as circumstances require.
In my spare time I enjoy
getting out and about on my motorcycle, listening to music and
reading (especially the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres). I
also have an active interest in the Internet and technology in
general.
