Professional
Summary
I have over 20
year’s invaluable technical experience as both a DBA and a
Developer. My main expertise is in the analysis, design,
development, implementation, tuning and production support of
database solutions. I specialise in Oracle and SQL Server
consultancy and have full project life cycle experience from
inception to delivery. I have also built up a large portfolio of
development skills covering multiple languages and am familiar
with many IDE and productivity tools. In addition I spent many
years working in a demanding first line technical support role
which helped developed a strong ability to diagnose and solve
problems under high pressure. I retain a great desire to learn
and a proven record of adapting to new technologies. I am very
adept at quickly picking up business standards and practices.

Career Detail
Contract
Jul 05-Jan07 19 Months (including extensions) – [snip],
Manchester
I worked on the SQL Server based EPPS (Electricity Pre-Payments)
Project as a Technical Designer. This involved producing low
level technical design from functional specifications, building
DTS packages and TSQL Stored procedures and functions and later
taking charge of the Physical Data Model and Database Schema for
deployment. I then performed warranty support, diagnosing and
curing production issues. The project was later extended to
include a new phase to incorporate Talexus and Smart Power
Metering where I was involved in all stages including technical
design, specification, coding, deployment and warranty support.
After 18 Months working on EPPS I then worked on the PPMIP
application providing performance tuning for the Pro*C and
PL/SQL Oracle application during the non-functional testing
phase of the project.
Jan 05-Jun05 6 Months – [snip] , Manchester
I worked as part of the DBA Team providing general development
and production support for Oracle 8, 9i & 10g and SQL Server 7
and 2000. In addition I performed in a number of Oracle and SQL
Server upgrades and recommended the implementation of Oracle
RMAN backups to replace the existing cold file backups for which
I designed a standard set of backup scripts and alert monitoring
mechanism.
Sept 04-Dec04 3 Months (including extension) – [snip],
Manchester
I worked as part of the Oracle Services Team answering support
calls from phone and ticketing system to provide 24x7 support
for hosted production Oracle8i/9i/10g Database's and Oracle
9i/10g iAS using OC4J. The original contract of 2 months was
extended by an extra month.
August 2004 1 Week – [snip], Bolton
I provided SQL Server production and development support while
the permanent DBA was on holiday.
August 2004 3 Weeks – [snip],
Nottingham
I built the interface component, using complex T-SQL stored
procedures, to deliver sales information to Boot’s supplier
base. This was an urgent, short notice, consultancy that
involved picking up the outstanding tasks on the critical path
to cover an employee’s absence.
Permanent
2001-2004 [snip] (Manchester)
2001-2004 Database DBA/Consultant
[snip]
While working at [snip] I worked in a Database Consultancy role
on a number of diverse projects for a wide range of external
clients including: -
Client: [snip]
Brief: To implement [snip] Merchandising Data Support (MDS)
Role: I had to port an existing prototype application from
Oracle 9i to SQL Server 2000 which involved rewriting the
application logic using T-SQL and DTS and managing the on-site
implementation. I also performed a database consultancy role
during the new [snip] site launch, which included implementing
an enhanced site search and database performance tuning.
Client: [snip]
Brief: To develop an on-line casino
Role: I designed the database schema and built the PL/SQL
packages to support a number of functions including the entire
reporting system. I developed a complex transfer mechanism using
a combination of snapshot replication and distributed
transactions to provide an archiving mechanism to a dedicated
reporting database. I performed index and SQL tuning to provide
optimal query performance and provided 2nd line
production support once the Oracle8i system was live.
Client: [snip]
Brief: To develop an on-line shop to sell Playstation games and
peripherals.
Role: I designed and built a two way interface from an MS
Commerce Server 2002 based on-line shop application to a
fulfilment partner, to supply orders and receive order status
updates, using Visual Basic 6 calling SQL Server 2000 stored
procedures.
Client: [snip]
Role: I provided 24x7 production support of the Oracle9i
database that was the backend for the [snip] works recruitment
website. I also managed database application software releases.
1999-2001 [snip]. (Manchester)
1999-2001 Senior Oracle DBA/Developer
E-commerce Development Team
[snip] provide
Fulfilment and Logistics software to an International client
base. I was a Senior Oracle DBA/Developer in the E-commerce
Development Team responsible for the administration of Oracle
software on NT and UNIX, application development in PL/SQL and
Visual Basic and consultancy on the latest Oracle technologies.
I worked on number of projects including:-
[snip]
Brief: To develop and implement an online ordering service.
Role:
I was the DBA and a lead developer on this bespoke project for a
longstanding FWL client. The requirement was for an e-commerce
system to allow their registered distributors to place orders
over the web. The majority of the site was stored in an Oracle
8.1.7 Database with HTML/JavaScript pages being generated using
a combination of Oracle PSP, WebDB and stored PL/SQL. The site
was implemented using Oracle9i Application Server as the web
server.
[snip]
Document Image Processing System
Brief: To improve invoice processing and storage
Role: I was responsible for the System and Database Design that
required Purchase Order Invoice Images and associated data to be
stored in an Oracle8i Database. On the application side I
developed Scanning and Archiving modules in Visual Basic and
Oracle Forms and the PL/SQL packages that linked Oracle (via
ODBC) to a legacy ISAM Database. On the implementation side I
created installation routines for building the Database on the
Server (NT4) and installing the Oracle and FWL modular software
on the Clients.

programming in SCL and Shell Script. Applications supported
included Housing Benefits, Council Tax, Payroll, Creditors,
Sundry Debtors and Social Services Client Information. I was
also required to provide a general support role, which
necessitated a wide knowledge of existing technology currently
in use at LCC and a capacity to learn new concepts and
techniques as and when required.
