is an international leader in the manufacture and
installation of recycling and cleaning technology. Areas
of difficulty included:
§
Proposing a solution for their engineering manufacturing
system (to replace the existing MAPICS software). After
much study it was decided to use Job Cost to meet this
requirement, rather than the JDE manufacturing module.
This turned out to be an excellent solution.
§
Reconcile group reporting requirements and, at the same
time, meet stringent Belgian Government and EU
requirements, as well as accommodate some unusual
Belgian accounting practices.
§
Provide a customised Forecast module
My role as part of the team is to:
§
Provide application implementation advice in
Distribution modules and Job Cost as well as assist in
Financial modules

[snip] Offshore Marine comprises five shipyards covering
New Building, Conversion and Ship Repair. [snip]
are recognised world leaders in oil platform building.
[snip] Shipyard implemented the full range of JDE’s
Project Management suite. [snip] migrated from
their JDE World Software to JDE OneWorld via
coexistence.
My role in the project involved Training, Business
Analysis, Prototype, specification of modifications,
Issue Resolution, Conversion and Live Support. I covered
all modules. In addition, I had to be aware of all other
aspects of KOM’s software including their eProcurement
solution, done by local business partner, S&I.
The whole application implementation was fully
subcontracted to me by S&I (Singapore). |

is a fast growing Malaysian Heavy Highway
construction and maintenance company. They implemented
the full range of JDE’s OW Xe construction suite. In
particular I covered Purchasing, Subcontract and
Equipment Management. In addition, they commissioned the
local JDE Partner, Sunway, to undertake the
customisation of a fully integrated construction
submodule. This included:
§
Tendering module
§
Treasury
§
Site Diary (daily valuation)
§
Client Billing
§
Subcontract progress claim
My role was in the overall design concept, detailed
specification of business requirements, guidance and
advice for the technical staff, problem resolution,
testing and final presentation to the customer. |

[snip] is a major construction company
based in Malaysia with many different businesses and
overseas projects. It is also one of the few really
successful and profitable construction enterprises in
Malaysia. They have used JDE for many years but they
recently concluded their upgrade from World to OW. My
involvement was as part of the JDE Partner's project
team:
§
General involvement in all modules
§
Implementing subcontract management in OW
§
Presentation of overall JDE concept and design to senior
management and assessment of modifications in the light
of the overall integration. Acting as mediator between
the customer and project team
§
Requirement gathering and business specification for a
customised equipment rental subsystem. This subsystem
was eventually written in VB, using my basic
specification, by [snip] the[snip]lves.
§
Preliminary involvement with [snip]'s internet based
purchasing project, advising on integration at the
"touch points". Eventually [snip] bought
[snip].
This project was very demanding especially in management
terms, including people and expectation management.
Although I was not the project manager, I was usually
viewed as the focal point for liaison with customer
management for the presentation of how the system was
intended to satisfy their business requirements. |

[snip] is one of the 3 large groups of shipbuilders that
dominate the busy Singapore/Johor shipping region, the
others being the [snip] and
[snip]
groups. All three
groups use JDE in at least some part of their operations
and I have had involvement in all three at one time or
another. All three are government related and they all
bear the historical legacy of fairly bureaucratic
procedures. [snip] itself has three distinct and very
different divisions: Shipbuilding, Ship repair and
Engineering. I visited [snip] in 1995 and again in 2001
when they undertook a thorough review of their computing
systems. At my suggestion, they decided to stay with JDE
World Software, there being no compelling reason to
migrate to OW. Since they had a large number of
customised subsystems they decided to try to streamline
their processes and use new JDE modules and features. So
they launched a long "optimisation" program starting
with fresh requirements gathering and moving on to full
retraining and finally implementation of new features,
coinciding with their upgrade to World version A7.3.
Again, this required strong presentation skills on my
part since I had to present to management and do all of
the training apart from purchasing and inventory. The
classes often contained up to 40 people at a time with a
very great variation in familiarity with JDE. |
