In the last year I have been taking some rest and changing some parts of my life. I have been guided by a nutritionist and lost 6 stone (37kg or 84lb) in weight. I have also attended Life Training courses and now also participate in the running of these courses as well as maintaining their manuals. For the manuals, I have written a system for their reports in Visual Basic (V6) using an Access database. I now feel fit and refreshed and would like to put what I have learned into practice at work.

I worked in Edinburgh amending and writing CICS and batch DB2 programs. I also co-ordinated a conversion of a BACS tape system to a high speed transmission link. In London I worked on converting a system to run on an instance of the
[snip] mainframe as part of the [snip] / [snip] take-over. This was a batch system using mainly sequential files, outputting data to diverse media (fiche, tape, print etc.) according to clients' wishes.

[snip] was enhancing its risk management exposure system, RICOS. The system was written on a PC network using Micro Focus COBOL accessing data through SQL commands. The system could then be re-compiled on the client's equipment and integrated into their systems. My main tasks were to write some new programs and to write a program to modify source-code for different versions of SQL.

The bank was installing a cheque imaging system using StorageTek hardware for data retrieval, using COBOL2 and DB2. My task was to write a COBOL2 / DB2 system for the system's tables. Using Micro Focus Cobol, and Workbench, development and testing was carried out on a PC before porting the system to the mainframe for final testing under Xpediter. This was a suite of ten programs controlling eight databases, using MQ for messaging. The system is euro and, of course, year 2000 compatible.

This site is a heavy user of COBOL2-DB2 programs. I wrote a new suite of programs for a new distribution system and modified about a dozen others to use DB2 because of internal changes to the business. I then worked on year 2000 changes and expansion modifications to the system, as well as modifying some Easytrieve Plus programs.

At a former Data Sciences site, I mainly worked on COBOL batch programs and JCL for a major client to migrate from an existing package to an IBM package, THREADS. The programs were written and tested on a Micro Focus system and then exported to the client's mainframe where I ran and tested them again. I also amended faults on CICS programs and co-ordinated the search-and-find project for 2000 bug fixing.

Working through Hoskyns, the team was modifying a system for calculating P11Ds for the bank's employees. I wrote and tested new programs and modified old ones for this enhanced system. I also worked on some QMF enquiries and advised other members of the team on COBOL2 and DB2 techniques. Most work was batch, using COBOL2, JCL, ViaSoft, writing test plans, test data and SPUFIs to show database modifications.

AGF had bought an IBM insurance package, Huon, which needed a large amount of tailoring and debugging. I started at AGF by correcting and inserting commands in print programs to work with a Xerox laser printer and writing extract programs to output to on-line control. I then worked with IBM personnel correcting faults in the base system through Infoman fault reports. I also worked with users running suites of programs for them to remove any faults found. Programs were written in COBOL2 and DB2. CICS on-line programs were debugged using Xpediter. Data was viewed through SPUFIs. I also wrote the associated JCL for batch programs.

Mercury had a number of disparate billing systems resulting in customers receiving multiple bills. A new system, based on a bought package CARMS, allows more flexible payment by customers. I wrote program specifications for a batch integration package to process output of existing billing systems to create customers' bills. I used Micro Focus Workbench to amend programs in the Private Circuit Billing system to prepare it for interfacing with CARMS.

The Banca Nazionale del Lavoro of Rome had ordered Sema's CardPac system that had required extensive modification. My main task was to modify some specifications and write and test the program that co-ordinates requests from cash-points to the networks that communicate between financial institutions to validate a request. This was a standard asynchronous CICS program. I also modified and tested several smaller programs that had to be amended for Italian practice.

The bank required a system to handle direct debits to replace a manual system. This system interfaced with a new telephone help-line system so that customers could check direct debit details without contacting their own branch. Due to this, the system had to be available 24 hours per day, with no noticeable delay to be caused by the batch system to the on-line side. My main task was to specify, write and test new programs.

[snip] was writing a system for international banks to keep control of their loans and exposure to other institutions. It was written and tested, using Workbench, in Micro Focus COBOL2-CICS with DB2 databases, other data being held on VSAM files. The system was designed to be highly flexible and user-friendly, as each user would have dissimilar needs. I wrote and tested new programs, both batch and on-line. IMS was enhancing a reporting system for their representatives' visits to medical installations. I wrote both program specifications and application programs. The system kept a cross-reference of doctors, representatives, products and other statistics. The user required a system to be able to display data by any cross-reference that could be deleted or modified, depending on user status. Deletes and modifications had to keep the cross-references in line and check that users did not change the same data simultaneously.
